5 Smart Reasons for Lawyers to Blog
Blogging is a valuable activity for lawyers whether it’s for a marketing or professional development purpose. Here are at least 5 reasons why lawyers should be blogging about the law:
1. Profile building.
The most obvious reason is that blogging helps you build your profile. Your blog posts help show that you are interested and knowledgeable in the areas you write about. In doing so, you are reinforcing your personal brand.
2. Keep up with the law.
You should be monitoring for the latest cases, law amendments and other legal-related changes or issues to provide you with content to blog about. In turn, this helps you stay on top in your practice areas.
3. Contributes to your analytic experience.
A practical post includes one that applies to a particular industry. For example, blogging about how a new piece of legislation affects a certain group starts to give you practical experience with the new law. You won’t get the same experience by simply reading the new law and summarizing it.
4. Sound byte creation.
Blogging is not the same as writing a legal article for an offline publication. Web writing typically involves a shorter word count. It also uses shorter sentences and the avoidance of legalese. By creating “simpler” content, it moves you closer to creating a sound byte on a subject matter. This comes in handy if you want to quickly mention the topic on your next call with a client, during a meeting with a potential client or at a marketing event if you’re asked “what’s new?”.
5. Content for sharing.
People are looking for good quality content to share on social media; something that is well written and resonates with the audience. Once you have a blog post published, you need to let your network know about it so they can share the post. This will help expand your reach. Hopefully readers will consider how the post may affect them and contact you. Publicizing your post may occur on social media such as sharing an update on LinkedIn. Also, don’t forget about your internal audience, being your colleagues at work. They may have clients who would be interested in the post. They may even have a client matter that has arisen, but aren’t sure who at the firm can handle the matter.
Several other reasons exist for lawyers to blog. If you have a legal blog, would you like to share why you blog?
