Use Social Media to Help Others Pronounce Your Name

Could you be missing out on working on a file because a potential client or a partner at your firm doesn’t know how to pronounce your name? Do you wish moderators, media hosts, and others introducing you could pronounce your name the way you’d like it to be pronounced?

Sure you could use the bio section of your social media profile to write out how to pronounce your name. For example, I can write “ee-VAH” (to avoid someone pronouncing my name as “eh-VAH”).

Wouldn’t it better if I actually said my name so people can hear how I pronounce it?

I could create a video simply pronouncing my name. Wouldn’t it be even better though if in my video I also provided some valuable information to showcase my expertise, interest in an industry, or involvement with a community?

Keep Your Video Short and Simple

Consider creating a very short video introducing yourself and providing information that would be helpful or of interest to those you want to reach. If you intend to create only one video to share on multiple social networking platforms including on Instagram, record a video that is less than a minute in length.

If you’re sharing the video on Twitter or a Facebook page, you may want to pin it to the top of your Twitter profile as a pinned tweet or to the top of your Facebook page as a pinned post. This will make the video easily accessible to someone viewing your Twitter profile or Facebook page.

Also consider creating and sharing on a consistent basis short videos offering valuable information and insight. Over time, such activity could result in people becoming familiar with pronouncing your name, and wondering how others could not possibly know how to pronounce it.

Too shy to do a video alone? Ask a colleague to be in the video too. You could even ask your colleague to introduce you.

I hope to see an increase in short videos by lawyers on social media, as video is currently underutilized by lawyers. Let’s reduce any fearfulness others may have in mispronouncing our name.
